In recent messages we've been studying Paul's warning against the tyranny of man-made doctrines based on counterfeit authority, in Colossians chapter two. As we look at church history we find that one Bible passage has been misused more than any other, in men's attempts to establish counterfeit authority within the church. That passage is Matthew 16:19, where Jesus says, "And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." The Roman Catholic church claims that the Pope is the one they call "the Vicar of Christ" - the one true representative of Christ on earth.
